Post Office Timings in India – Working Hours And Lunch Time

Indian Post Office plays a major role in several official and personal works even today! Though we are technically advanced, Postal Department has maintained its consistency.

The Director-General of Posts, New Delhi administers The Postal Department. India is divided into 16 postal circles under the postmaster general. Further, Post Offices have been classified into three categories, i.e., Head Post Offices, Sub-Post offices and E.D. Branch Post Offices.

It is essential to have an idea about the timings of Post Offices in India, so that, you could accordingly plan your work and visit the post office without waiting for long hours or returning without doing the work.

Timings and working shifts at Indian Post Offices you must know about:

In general, the working hours of the Post Offices are from 8 AM to 4 PM. But the timing may extend under the instruction of Director General of Posts for certain cases.

  • Post Offices remain closed on Sundays except for the Night Post Offices.
  • Post Offices remain closed on public holidays as well.
  • Post Offices remain opened on Saturday Except Gazetted Holidays
  • Working hours of post office on Saturday is same as like other Days.
  • Apart from the public holidays, the post offices across the country remain closed for another five days, but the day of holidays varies from circle to circle.
  • Lunch hours vary from circle to circle, but the usual lunch timing is from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM.

Important Notes: If you wish to avoid the crowd at the Post Office and get your work done easily, you must know the opening timing. Avoid plans to visit the post office just before lunch hour. After the lunch hour, the post office will get highly crowded.

Get an idea about the post office in your region and make sure to get your work done without any trouble! You must also have the idea about the holidays so that you could set your works accordingly!

    Regarding delay speed post and not proper reply ranip post office pin 382480 post office window staff tell me our duty time 9:30 to 5:30

    Postman tell me time 4 pm over my duty now who is wrong me or they?
    also told me you can collect your speed post next day like after 2 days,

    back office staff also will not support any kind of postman information how to contact him ? this is a painful duty for postman and window staff and back office staff, do not a responsibility

    sir tell now we are educated person very bad experience from post office just think about the local people like uneducated women or men how can do that?

  3. Sir I went to Basveshwara nagara post office at 3.15 on 22 March(Wednesday). But they saying working hour is 9 to 2 pm. After that they the will not work.

Sir, I visited Gandhigram Post office Pin 530005 on 24 Feb 18 at 1500 hrs . on Saturday for updating of my MIS Pass book.They did not update pass book because they replied Saturday is half day if half day is observed then working hours timing to be display on board.Timing display only Sunday&and National holiday is closed & mostly a person standing in line for updating pass book when his turn come they told net work problem inspite of cash depositing and cash withdrawal continue is in progress. They simply told come in afternoon and behaviour with customer is not good. So I request u to do need fully sir.

    Regarding lunch time you have mentioned that it is generally 1:30 PM to 2:30 pm where as the Pilathara Sub post office Pin 570504 always closes,by shutting the shutter for lunch 12 noon and the customers are to wait for an hour.it is very inconvenience for the customers.
